The Ministry of Health is working to make all healthcare facilities paperless. This is a key part of their plan to deliver Universal Health Coverage. When you go from one facility to another, your records will be available in the system. A comprehensive, integrated health information management system is necessary. It will improve efficiency in health service delivery and provide data portability and visibility. The Ministry of Health hired a group led by Safaricom to digitize the entire healthcare system. The healthcare system includes over 6,000 public facilities and regulatory agencies under the ministry. These include the Medical Council, Pharmacy and Poisons Board, Clinical Officers Council, Nursing Council of Kenya, Kenya Health Professionals Oversight Authority, Social Health Authority, Kemsa, healthcare workers, and others. The government could not fund the project right away. They chose a system-as-a-service model provided by the consortium instead. The systems and services are paid for as they are used. The healthcare system is a 10-year project. It involves giving devices to more than 6,000 facilities. The devices need power backup. Internet connectivity is also essential for smooth service delivery. Data cloud storage and health management information systems are being implemented. Training is being provided, and data security is being improved. President William Ruto denied reports that the government spent Sh104 billion to buy the Social Health Authority (SHA) system. He spoke in Malava, Kakamega, on Tuesday during the burial of the late MP Malulu Injendi. Ruto said the government will not use any funds to pay for it, except for the service facility fee. He explained that a group of technology companies runs the system. They will ensure there are no fraudulent claims, as happened with NHIF.
