Mityana Municipality has created a new by-law requiring residents to sort trash before throwing it away. This rule helps reduce pressure on Namukozi Landfill and creates a cleaner town for everyone. Leaders believe these changes can transform how the community handles waste. The town includes three areas: Ttamu, Central, and Busimbi. These neighborhoods produce large amounts of garbage every day. Regular truck pickups cannot keep pace with the rapid urban growth and aging collection equipment. Mayor Faustine Mukambwe Lukonge believes the sorting rules will improve conditions throughout the area. Mayor Mukambwe explained that their program asks households to separate waste types, though many people have been slow to change their habits. This approach helps with proper decomposition and extends the time Namukozi Landfill can serve the community before reaching capacity limits. Namukozi Landfill covers about 8.5 acres and serves multiple purposes beyond just collecting trash. The site manages sewage and even provides burial services. It serves not just Mityana town but the entire district, raising serious questions about how much waste it can handle long-term. Mayor Mukambwe emphasized that much waste arriving at Namukozi should never end up there. Sorting trash at home helps officials manage the site better and makes it useful for more years. This approach saves money and protects the local environment from contamination. Medical waste creates major problems when hospitals dispose of it improperly. Some medical facilities ignore proper guidelines, creating dangers for workers who handle trash and nearby residents. Local authorities want tougher enforcement of rules for disposing of hazardous materials. The mayor pointed out how hospitals create materials needing special treatment, yet dangerous items often mix with regular garbage. This careless disposal threatens public health when simple sorting could prevent these problems from occurring. Town leaders plan strict enforcement of the new rules, including fines for those who refuse to sort their waste. When families separate trash at home, workers can easily find recyclable materials and keep dangerous items separate from everyday waste. Money remains a big concern for waste management programs. The municipality spends over 10 million Ugandan Shillings every month just to maintain the Namukozi Landfill. Without better sorting practices, these costs will grow as the dump fills faster than planned. Mityana has asked Uganda's government for more resources to improve garbage collection. They need more trucks, modern equipment, and better disposal systems. The mayor believes updated equipment would make the collection more efficient and reduce residents' costs. Despite obstacles, town officials remain determined to make their waste strategy work. Success depends on how well residents follow the new sorting guidelines and disposal rules. Everyone must work together to create lasting improvements. Mityana hopes to show other towns how urban waste management can succeed through these efforts. With consistent enforcement, public participation, and adequate funding, the town can create a cleaner, healthier place for all residents to enjoy.
