KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi said he is not afraid of prosecution after perjury charges were filed by National Coloured Congress lawmaker Fadiel Adams. Speaking Thursday in Durban at the launch of the province’s festive season safety campaign, he cast the case as an effort to intimidate him over testimony at the Madlanga Commission. Western Cape police confirmed a perjury case was registered in Cape Town. Mkhwanazi has been called back to Parliament’s ad hoc committee and says he will explain his earlier statements and retraction. The dispute grew from his appearance before the committee probing corruption and political interference in police matters. He had suggested former Police Minister Bheki Cele may have received money from alleged cartel leader Vusimuzi Matlala, then sent an apology by text and withdrew the claim while Cele testified last week. Adams argues that the reversal conflicts with sworn evidence and has also opened a nepotism case against National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola. Mkhwanazi has accused Adams of mishandling classified intelligence and linked the June 2025 arrest of Crime Intelligence head Major General Dumisani Khumalo to internal syndicate probes. Adams says he seeks a clean SAPS and plans further complaints, including against Shadrack Sibiya if evidence emerges. The outcome could shape public trust as inquiries continue.
