Christopher Mutsvangwa said President Mnangagwa kicked out Zimbabwe Army Commander General Anselem Sanyatwe. He claimed Sanyatwe worked with war veterans under Blessed Geza to remove the president from power. Mutsvangwa never said Sanyatwe by name but made it clear that high-ranking military leaders planned against Mnangagwa. Mnangagwa quickly named Lieutenant General Emmanuel Matatu the new army leader and sent Sanyatwe away to serve as Sports Minister instead. Most people see this job change as an embarrassing step down for Sanyatwe. The president made these fast changes to weaken anyone in the military who might support his deputy, Chiwenga. The fight between Mnangagwa and Chiwenga started when they pushed Robert Mugabe out of office back in 2017. Chiwenga ran the army then and helped Mnangagwa become president. Their friendship fell apart fast after that. Mnangagwa began pushing away his deputy and removing military officers loyal to Chiwenga. Since 2018, Mnangagwa has replaced Police Commissioner Godwin Matanga with Stephen Mutamba. He also put former Parks director Fulton Mangwanya in charge of intelligence operations. The latest removal of Sanyatwe further breaks down Chiwenga's support network. Mnangagwa clearly wants only his trusted friends in key security jobs. Many believe Mnangagwa wants to stay president past his legal term limit in 2028. Chiwenga and his supporters strongly reject this idea. Experts think Mnangagwa changed security leaders to crush any possible resistance early. The power battle has reached war veterans groups, where Chiwenga supporters like Geza tried organizing street protests against the president. Mutsvangwa called these protests just a chance to cause trouble. His statement shows that Mnangagwa plans to shut down anyone who disagrees with him. These changes in military leadership show how serious the power struggle between the president and his deputy has become.
