President Mnangagwa has given Emmanuel Matatu a big promotion. The Zimbabwe president bumped Major-General Matatu up to Lieutenant-General. He also named him Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army effective right away. The changes happened because Mnangagwa serves as Commander-in-chief of all Zimbabwe Defence Forces.

Dr. Martin Rushwaya announced these changes yesterday. He is the Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet. The official statement mentioned that this happened under Sections 216 and 89 of the Zimbabwe Constitution. The Defence Act Chapter 11:02 sections 11(1)(a) and 11(4) also played a part in making this happen. The president acted within his legal powers.

Matatu takes over from Lieutenant-General Anselem Sanyatwe, who retired on Tuesday. The government moved Sanyatwe into a different leadership role. After leaving military service, he became the Minister of Sports, Recreation, Arts, and Culture. The transition happened fast between the retirement and new appointments.

The military has promoted Matatu before. He jumped from Brigadier General to Major-General back in 2021. His career path shows steady advancement through military ranks. Matatu previously worked at Zimbabwe National Defence University. He later served at Army headquarters as Chief of Staff Administration Staff until this promotion came through.
