President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe urged SADC leaders to act now. They must address the growing humanitarian crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Mnangagwa is the current Chairman of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). His call to action comes after a tragic event this week. Congolese March 23 Movement (M23) rebels killed 16 soldiers. The soldiers were serving as SADC and United Nations (UN) peacekeepers.

President Mnangagwa spoke at the opening of an Extraordinary Summit in Harare on Friday. He said the situation in the DRC cannot be ignored.

"We must not forget the humanitarian crises caused by the conflict in Eastern DRC," Mnangagwa stated. "Millions of people have been displaced. We cannot and should not ignore their suffering."

Mnangagwa said SADC appreciates the help given by international partners. But he emphasized that more must be done to improve the situation. The people of Eastern DRC have suffered for far too long.

The SADC Chairman strongly condemned the attacks by the M23 rebels. The region is in mourning over the loss of the peacekeepers. But Mnangagwa declared that SADC's commitment to collective security remains firm.

He called for bold efforts to promote dialogue and peace for the people of Eastern DRC. Mnangagwa reaffirmed that the SADC region is ready to ramp up efforts to protect its citizens. This aligns with the SADC Mutual Defence Pact.
