Norton Event Honors Music Legend Mtukudzi with Marathon.

The 2025 Oliver Mtukudzi Half Marathon drew 546 runners to Norton's Pakare Paye Arts Centre last Sunday. The event marked a rise from last year's 500 participants.

"We celebrated Dr. Mtukudzi's legacy with great enthusiasm," said marathon director Sylvia Sanyanga. The day included races, music, and health displays focused on diabetes awareness.

The gathering honored Mtukudzi, a national hero who died in January 2019 at the age of 66. His burial took place at his Madziwa home in Mashonaland Central.

After the races, John Cole led Zumba sessions, adding fitness activities to the celebration. The health expo brought medical information to attendees.

Young singer Benard Betera performed Mtukudzi hits, including "Chipembenene" and "Tozeza Baba." The Black Spirits band played with Watson Chidzomba Junior on lead vocals. Mtukudzi's daughter Samantha joined the group on stage.

Singer Tariro NeGitare performed her Afro-fusion music backed by the Black Spirits. Deputy Sports Minister Emily Jesaya and Arts Director Biggie Samwanda attended the tribute.

Plans have started for the Oliver Mtukudzi International Festival of the Arts in 2025. "Tuku left a rich legacy. We aim to create an even better festival," Sanyanga said.

Chairperson Tendayi Hlupo brought sponsor Zim Cyber City to provide prizes for runners and guests. The event brought Norton to life, mixing sports with musical tributes to Zimbabwe's beloved artist.
