Malawi faces serious sugar problems right now. The Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives wants Trade Minister Vitumbiko Mumba to fix these issues fast. They believe he should hold an emergency meeting to discuss the constant shortages and high prices that are hurting people across the country. CDEDI leader Sylvester Namiwa points out something fishy - sugar always seems scarce, yet Illovo Sugar keeps making huge profits every year. This pattern continues year after year, leaving regular citizens frustrated and confused about why they can't find affordable sugar. For over 60 years, the sugar business has operated in Malawi without much benefit going to local farmers or the government. CDEDI claims sugar operates like a powerful group that controls everything. They say Malawians need to work together against this system, especially since people gave up their land for sugarcane farms. Still, they ironically can't buy the Vitamin A-enriched sugar made there. The situation looks even worse because a law meant to clean up the sugar industry has sat untouched for 11 years. This delay essentially lets Illovo Sugar act as if it runs sugar matters completely. The company even blocked authorities through legal action when they tried to cut prices by 25 percent or start legal proceedings. CDEDI demands answers at this emergency meeting about several key facts. They want clear information about deals between Illovo Sugar and current distributors. They ask how much sugar actually gets produced and who receives what amounts through the distribution system. Minister Mumba has already started investigating. He showed up unannounced at the Chipiku Plus store in Lilongwe's Game Complex and caught the store hiding sugar instead of selling it. He immediately ordered the store to put all sugar on shelves and limit customers to two packets each. The message from CDEDI stresses that more actions must follow. They emphasize that everyday Malawians deserve access to affordable sugar without constant shortages or price manipulation. The current system simply doesn't work for regular citizens who need this basic food item.
