A court in Harare put a robber in prison this week. He helped steal US$52,000 from a hardware store last year.
The judge gave Tapiwanashe Murefu, age 26, a 15-year prison term. The court made the sentence less hard by taking off 10 years. This means Murefu must stay in jail for five years.
The court said Murefu must pay back US$51,000 to make up for the crime.
On March 4, 2023, Murefu and three other men planned the theft at Bhola Hardware in Harare. The other men were Tawanda Mutuma, 30, Edmond Nzombe, 47, and Jefferes Chapwanyira, 29. Mutuma had worked at the store before.
Mutuma told the group what he knew about the store. They and eight more people, who the police had not found, came in a black Toyota Wish car to take the money.
The police caught all four men and brought them to court. The judge found only Murefu did wrong. The other three men went free.
