President Museveni gave 500 million Ugandan shillings to help fix up St. Mary's Catholic Church in Kisoro District. This church stands as one of the oldest Catholic parishes in Kabale diocese, dating back to 1929. The church plans to celebrate its 100th birthday in 2029. The parish needs money for major repairs before this big anniversary. The news about Museveni's cash gift came out Sunday during a special Mass at St. Paul Mutolere Boys Secondary School. Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa attended as the main guest. Former Police Chief Edward Kale Kayihura shared the president's pledge with everyone. When he announced the money, church members cheered loudly. Kayihura thanked the Catholic Church for praying for the current government and promised to work hard to raise the full 2 billion shillings needed for church repairs. Tayebwa spoke about leaders working together with regular people and criticized how some leaders in the Kisoro district create division among citizens based on tribal or religious differences. The Deputy Speaker called churches key supporters of society because they bring people together, teach kids, and help with healthcare. These church services complement what the government does. Tayebwa asked locals to keep backing the ruling party as their best path to progress. He pushed leaders to stay united behind Museveni. Church official Asigario Turyagyenda explained that the church needs 2 billion shillings in total to be fixed. The money will help renovate the main building and create new priest housing, offices, and a deanery center. Bishop Callistus Rubaramira asked church members to trust the Holy Spirit for guidance during fundraising. Many people gave money at the event. The group raised almost 1.5 billion shillings that day. Tayebwa donated 100 million, businessman King Ceasor Augustus Mulenga gave 100 million, and Kayihura contributed 35 million. St. Mary's ranks as the third oldest parish in its diocese. Only Nyakibale Parish from October 1929 and Kabale Parish came earlier. Kitanga Parish opened later in 1935, then Makiro Parish started in 1944.
