Public Service CS Justin Muturi says the Democratic Party of Kenya sent notice they plan to exit the Kenya Kwanza Coalition. This party has connections to him, but he explained they make their decisions without checking with him first. The group sent official paperwork stating they wanted out of their political alliance.
Muturi told Citizen TV the party handles regular business through their management team. They choose whatever helps their group most. They sent a letter to the registrar about leaving without talking to him about it beforehand. The Democratic Party submitted their 30-day exit notice last Wednesday, which Registrar Anne Nderitu confirmed receiving at her office.
Muturi discovered this letter only after they had already delivered it elsewhere. He accepts that authorized party officials made this choice on their authority. Muturi entered the Kenya Kwanza alliance with the DP through papers signed in May 2022, making them an official alliance member. Party representatives had earlier selected Muturi as their leader at a February 2022 gathering, but he left that position when officials picked him as Attorney General.
The notice explained staying with Kenya Kwanza no longer worked because of recent political shifts. DP Secretary General Dr. Jacob Haji signed the March 7 document. They stated their departure follows rules from section 8 of their agreement. The change starts from the letter date. Government rules say the Registrar cannot stop any political party from leaving a coalition if they give 30 days' notice. They addressed this message to Kenya Kwanza leadership and sent copies to Ford Kenya, UDA, and Maendeleo Chap Chap officials, with DP Chairperson Esau Kioni adding his signature.
