On the first day of 2025, Namibia had something to celebrate. 161 babies were born across the country, just one less than in 2024.

The Ohangwena region had the most births, with 35. According to Walters Kamaya from the Ministry of Health, 90 of the babies were girls, and 71 were boys.

Khomas had the next highest number, with 19 births. Then came Kavango East with 16 and Zambezi with 14. Erongo saw 13 new babies.

Other regions had births, too. These included Oshana with 12, Kavango West with 9, and Kunene and Omusati with eight each. Smaller numbers were seen in places like Otjozondjupa, Omaheke, Oshikoto, Hardap, and Kharas.

Namibia's first baby of the year was a girl. She was born at 12:01 a.m. in Kavango West and weighed 2.5 kg. The second baby arrived at 12:10 a.m. in Khomas. The last baby of the day was born at 10 p.m. in Oshana.

Mr. Kamaya said there were no major problems. Most babies were born naturally. A few needed a C-section.

Some new moms shared their joy. Anesita Sikota, age 40, had her fifth child in Zambezi. She said it was a blessing to give birth on New Year's Day.

Kaarina Ngesheya, 24, from Khomas also felt blessed. She said her baby boy made her rethink her plans for the year.

For Melissa Kauatojao, 28, it was extra special. She had her baby girl on her birthday, and she was excited to be a mom. She looked forward to sharing birthdays with her daughter.

All the mothers thanked the kind doctors and nurses who helped them. Namibia also had 166 babies born on Christmas Day. It was a great start to 2025.
