Namibians Encouraged to Write Their History

Namibian Leaders Call for More Written Stories About Nation's History.

President Nangolo Mbumba and National Assembly Speaker Peter Katjavivi asked people to write about their part in Namibia's growth. They spoke at an event for a new book about the late President Hage Geingob.

The book, "Whispers of Freedom – a political odyssey of Hage G Geingbo," comes from Audrin Mathe, who leads the information and communication technology office. President Mbumba praised Mathe for adding to the nation's recorded past.

"These stories help us learn from our history," Mbumba said. "They show us Namibia's path from before freedom until today. We can use these lessons to make life better for everyone."

Mbumba urged people to read about Geingob's life. He said the story belongs to all Namibians because it tells about their push for freedom and self-rule.

Katjavivi backed this view. He asked more people to write down their experiences, like Mathe did with Geingob's political life. "Writing helps people here and abroad understand our nation's roots and what we want for the future," he said.

The book made Katjavivi think about his times with Geingob. Johan Ndjaronguru, who protected Geingob for 22 years, believes people close to leaders should write about important moments they shared.

"Our four presidents have many years of experience in making Namibia free," Ndjaronguru said. "Their wisdom beats what you might learn at school. Those of us who knew Dr. Geingob's kind acts and good leadership should write about them."

Mathe spent more than ten years making the book. He first talked with Geingob in 2012, but the real work started in 2020. "He let me see all parts of his life. I spent many hours at his house," Mathe said.

Geingob wanted the book to show Mathe's view of his political work. "He never tried to change what I saw or found," Mathe said.

President Mbumba launched the book two days after people remembered Geingob one year after his death.
