Narok Floods Kill Two And Lightning Zaps Cows

Flash floods swept away two people Tuesday night in Narok Central as they tried crossing a flooded area. Police Commander John Momanyi said the seasonal river carried them off during their crossing attempt. Community members worked with police to find the bodies, which were taken to Naivasha Sub-County Hospital. The police chief warned residents against crossing flooded areas during rainy seasons. These deaths happened as weather experts predict heavy rainfall across most parts of Kenya this week.

Lightning struck eight cows sheltering under a tree in Mararianta village, Narok West sub-county. The animals belonged to Peter Sasiet, who had them take cover during a heavy downpour. Rivers throughout the county have filled after two weeks of continuous rain. The IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Center projects rainfall might become heavier across Kenya and the Greater Horn of Africa. The center expects moderate rainfall between 50 and 200 millimeters in many East African countries.

Weather experts caution that northeastern Kenya and parts of Tanzania face possible flooding from these storms. Communities living in low areas need to remain alert for rising water. The Narok tragedy comes amid increasing weather warnings from meteorologists. Local officials urge people to avoid dangerous water crossings. Recent observations show many waterways have reached dangerous levels throughout the region.
