Neil Young started his world tour with the Chrome Hearts band in Sweden on Wednesday night. The group played their first official show at Dalhalla in Rättvik after forming last year at Farm Aid. Young originally wanted to begin the tour with a free concert in Ukraine but had to cancel those plans.

The Chrome Hearts features guitarist Micah Nelson and bassist Corey McCormick with drummer Anthony LoGerfo. Session organist Spooner Oldham rounds out the lineup for the legendary rocker. They just released their first album called Talkin To The Trees last week before hitting the road.

Young opened the evening with Sugar Mountain played alone on acoustic guitar. He wrote that song when he turned 19 years old many decades ago. The full band joined him for Be The Rain from his 2003 rock opera that he had not performed live since 2014.

The setlist featured several rare tracks that fans rarely hear during concerts. Sun Green from the Greendale album had not appeared in live shows for over 20 years. Young also played two songs from his work with Crosby Stills Nash and Young called Looking Forward and Name Of Love.

The concert mixed deep cuts with popular hits that audiences expect to hear. Young performed The Needle And The Damage Done solo for the first time since the pandemic started. Classic songs like Cinnamon Girl and Hey Hey My My filled out the evening with Rockin In The Free World as the encore.
