The National Housing Corporation plans to build 2,820 affordable homes with help from private companies. They will use 23 acres they already have at Stoni Athi Water Front City in Machakos County. At a meeting for investors held at Boma Inn Hotel Nairobi, Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome talked about Kenya's big housing problem. The country needs about 200,000 new homes each year as more people move to cities. Kenya created its National Housing Policy in 2016 to attract private money to housing projects. Then, in 2017, it started the Affordable Housing Programme to build 200,000 low-cost homes each year across the country. Statistics show that Kenya's total population will grow from 50.8 million to 55.8 million between 2022 and 2028. The number of working-age folks between 15 and 64 will rise from 30.4 million to 35.1 million during those same years. Wahome stated that affordable housing remains a main focus in the government's Bottom-up Economic Plan and fits with Kenya's Vision 2030 social goals. The NHC wants to fix housing shortages by teaming up with private firms that bring both cash and skills to build good, lasting homes. David Mathu, who runs the NHC, said the project will have both cheap units and regular-priced homes with all needed roads and services. The homes will follow a simple pattern: 25% will be one-bedroom, 50% two-bedroom, and 25% three-bedroom. The builder they pick must handle the design, money, building, and selling of these homes. When finished, they must give the agreed-upon affordable units to NHC. Mathu said they want to use earth-friendly designs for green living. Housing leader Charles Hinga and NHC Board Chairman Yusuf Chanzu came to the meeting.
