The National Health Insurance Authority held a recent press conference to share updates about its work. The authority met with government officials, health workers, partners, and reporters at SDKJ-ICC. The group discussed how it wants to make healthcare easier for people across the country and explained changes happening with healthcare plans nationwide. The government started the National Health Insurance Scheme in 2021. This plan aims to help middle—and low-income earners pay less money for basic medical care. The Authority has worked since then to oversee and regulate all private insurance plans. They want to make sure everyone follows the rules for healthcare coverage. Bai Mass Saine leads the NHIA as CEO and spoke about protecting residents from money problems when they need medical help. He explained the system works for everyone regardless of background. The Authority wants all residents to receive necessary care without facing financial hardships afterward. Their main goal focuses on including every person who needs medical services. Dr. Hassan Njie runs health services at NHIA and talked about their progress during recent months. He mentioned that 538 women joined the program, with 399 fully registered for the insurance pilot phase. The program was first tested at Bundung Maternal and Child Hospital starting July 2023. They chose this location because it serves mothers and children, which matched their initial focus. The Authority expanded beyond its first test location after learning important lessons. They added twelve more public health facilities, including general and specialist hospitals. Only Sheikh Zayed Eye Care Centre remains outside the current system. The NHIA continues working closely with the health ministry, private doctors, and international supporters to ensure steady funding and resources. Leaders admitted they face several problems despite making good progress. They mentioned money shortages, people hesitant to sign up, and difficulties reaching rural areas. The group promised to address these issues through public awareness programs and policy improvements. They plan to involve community members more actively going forward. Plans include signing up more people, improving services, and creating new ways to pay for the program. The Authority wants to use digital tools for patient registration and processing claims faster. They created an electronic platform to handle insurance matters more efficiently. These improvements should help the system run better for everyone involved. The NHIA asked all Gambians to join the insurance program and use its benefits. Officials encouraged citizens to learn about how registration works and who qualifies. Many stakeholders believe strong partnerships and ongoing commitment will help The Gambia achieve universal health coverage. They remain hopeful about reaching their goal of medical care for all citizens.
