Norman Chipfumbi performs as Nicky Genius around Zimbabwe. This talented musician creates songs, writes lyrics, and produces tracks from his home base in Harare. Many fans know him best for his popular track "Loss," to which Holy Ten added guest vocals. He mixes several styles together when making music—you'll hear hip-hop beats with R&B smoothness plus touches of afrobeat and dancehall rhythms. Famous Zimbabwe artists like Winky D, Tocky Vibes, Holy Ten, Ishan, Poptain, and Baba Harare have worked with Nicky on various projects. He mainly writes about personal life experiences, deep feelings, and problems facing society. Born and raised in Kuwadzana, Nicky had reached 25 years old, according to an interview given last December 2022. The story behind his stage name changes depending on when you ask him. He once told NewsDay that "Nicky" came from playing with the word nickname plus adding a Y at the end. Later, during his production career, a friend from Jamaica called him "Genius" after watching him create an amazing beat. Another time, Nicky explained he wrote "Nicky Genius" on school walls as a kid, loving dictionaries and believing he could succeed at anything with the right mindset. Nicky started making music professionally as a producer in 2013, marking ten years in the business by 2023. His first actual song came earlier, though—he recorded "Vakandimaka" during school in 2012. Money problems forced him toward production instead of singing initially because he couldn't afford studio fees. He taught himself music production using his brother's laptop and quickly learned enough skills to start working alongside Zimdancehall vocalist Maffcat. Their collaboration produced a popular Zimdancehall riddim called "Hurura MaMburugwa," which featured various artists, including Ninja Lipsy. Nicky later shifted toward creating Afrobeats tracks he could sell for profit. These sales helped him purchase his first real equipment pieces. After setting up a small studio space in Kuwadzana, he kept improving his craft until better quality beats attracted customers worldwide. His client list grew to include Jamaican performers Dovey Magnum, Alkaline, and Studio Vibes artists. Success allowed Nicky to upgrade his recording setup with modern technology. Everything changed for him in 2020 when he produced the hit song "Chandelier" for Winky D. This track caught the attention of the American record label Golden Generation, which quickly signed Nicky to their roster. He then expanded beyond production into performing as a full artist himself. Early 2021 saw him release his first EP, "Feelings," which contained the popular track "Sonono." Nicky released an album called "Ndokutendai Nei," meaning "How Can I Thank You?" in Shona, in 2021. This project contained ten songs featuring collaborations with several big names from Zimbabwe. His singles include tracks like "Feelings," "Moyo Wangu," and "My Love." Many music fans consider him part of a new generation changing how Zimbabwean music sounds today.
