KAMPALA, Uganda - The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has a message for its political members: Do not interfere with updating the party's voter lists.

Dr. Tanga Odoi leads the NRM's Electoral Commission (EC). On Tuesday, he told NRM politicians to follow orders from the party's main office. He said the party would not allow them to get involved in the voter list update that is happening now.

"Some politicians want to run for office. They want to control things. Our party will not let this happen," Tanga said. He spoke to party officials in the Buikwe district. "These are our workers. They only take orders from party leaders."

Tanga told the officials updating the lists not to give in to political pressure. He also said some politicians are calling list workers opposition members.

"If a list worker does not agree with a leader, the leader may start rumors. They may say the worker is part of the opposition," he added. "Some of these workers have been with the NRM for a long time. It is not right to call them opposition just because they disagree with you."

Tanga also said that President Yoweri Museveni created a special team. The team will help politicians in the NRM work together better. The goal is to end splits in the party.

The NRM started updating its voter lists in March 2023. In the first part of the update, about 18 million people signed up as NRM members. The second part will begin on Wednesday, January 29, 2024, and last four days.
