Nujoma's Farewell Shakes Ondangwa in Epic Send Off

Many people came to say goodbye to Sam Nujoma at Andimba Toivo ya Toivo Airport in Ondangwa. Mr Nujoma was the first president of Namibia, and people loved him very much. His body traveled from Windhoek to his home village, Etunda, in the Omusati region.

People arrived at the airport very early in the morning, at six o'clock, because they wanted to be there when his body arrived. Another former president, Mr Hifikepunye Pohamba, joined Mr Nujoma's family at the airport. Mr Nujoma had died on February 8 in a hospital in Windhoek. He was 95 years old.

Old soldiers who fought for Namibia's freedom sang special songs to remember Mr Nujoma. Military trucks carried his coffin through the streets of Ondangwa and Oshakati. People stood along the roads to watch. Many people cried because they felt sad. Some people wore special shirts with Mr Nujoma's picture on them, and others held flags and pictures of him. Schoolchildren and older people all came to say goodbye.

The people will have a special service to remember Mr Nujoma in his village, Etunda. His body will stay there overnight. The next day, they will take him to another place called Eenhana for another service. On March 1, they will bury Mr Nujoma at Heroes' Acre, a special place where important people who helped Namibia are buried.
