The Obote family wants a Ugandan minister out of their dad's house now. The late former president Apollo Milton Obote's heirs, led by his eldest son Tony Akaki, ordered Minister Betty Amongi Ongom to immediately stop using the family homes for political operations. This includes a residence in Lira City. The family accused Amongi of using the property to campaign for President Yoweri Museveni and the ruling NRM party. They called this activity a disgrace, saying it promoted a military dictatorship from Obote's own home. Akaki stated the family viewed these reports with disdain and disgust. He demanded that Amongi and her NRM supporters vacate the property forthwith. The accusation extended to remarks the minister allegedly made in March, insulting former First Lady Miria Obote. Amongi supposedly claimed Miria failed to preserve the Obote legacy and that she herself was protecting the name. The family said her actions, including alleged corruption and abuse of NRM patronage, tainted Obote's principles and the Uganda People's Congress party. They referenced Obote's 1998 message about removing the NRA dictatorship, saying that the struggle continues. The statement condemned current human rights abuses and economic mismanagement under the NRM. Akaki also cited a 2023 parliamentary committee that investigated the National Social Security Fund. That probe found Amongi culpable and recommended her resignation over a request for six billion shillings. He recalled her 2018 land-grabbing allegations before the Bamugemereire Commission. The family explicitly distanced themselves from her, calling her despicable. This rift goes back years, with Akaki calling Amongi a mole sent to destroy the Obote legacy in 2016. Amongi married Obote's son Jimmy Akena in 2013 in a ceremony attended by Museveni, before joining the NRM government in 2016.
