Officer in Masai case cites errors, memory lapse in testimony

Principal Magistrate Geoffrey Onsarigo postponed the Rex Masai death inquiry until July 29, 2025, at 2 PM. Corporal Martin Githinji from Central Police Station's intelligence unit testified as a key witness. The officer denied discharging weapons during the June 2024 anti-government demonstrations. Githinji stated that neither he nor his subordinates fired their firearms during deployment operations. He emphasized strict adherence to weapon accountability protocols throughout the protest period.

The corporal received a Jericho pistol with fifteen rounds on June 19, 2024, for River Road deployment. He returned the weapon with all ammunition intact by 6 PM that evening. Githinji confirmed personally signing for the firearm according to department regulations. The armory register showed his name twice due to clerical error by staff members. He explained that correction attempts created confusion about weapon distribution records.

Githinji contradicted his previous statement to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority regarding June 18 weapon issuance. He claimed memory lapses caused the discrepancy between testimonies. The officer maintained that no demonstrations occurred on June 18 or 19. He learned about protest events through social media and television coverage. Githinji confirmed that officer Simon Waweru served under his direct command during this period.
