Nigeria's opposition party leaders rejected claims about changing their important meeting date. The Peoples Democratic Party working committee said reports about postponing their June 30 gathering were false. Party officials also disputed stories saying Samuel Anyanwu returned to his secretary position. Committee members issued a statement denying these announcements on Wednesday. The group responded to earlier comments made during a press conference. Acting party leader Umar Damagum had told reporters the meeting would not happen as planned. He also declared that Anyanwu could return to work as the national secretary. Senior party officials disagreed with both statements from their temporary chairman. They said his words went against decisions made during their previous official gathering. The committee reminded everyone that only certain groups can change meeting plans. Party rules state that the national executive committee makes the most important decisions. The constitution gives this group power over all other party members and smaller committees. No single person can overturn choices made during official executive meetings. The working committee called Damagum's announcement about Anyanwu misleading and wrong. They said the secretary question must wait for the June 30 gathering. Five senior party officials signed the statement rejecting Damagum's claims. Deputy chairman Taofeek Arapaja joined other leaders in opposing the postponement announcement. The group stressed that their scheduled meeting will proceed as originally planned. All matters concerning party leadership positions remain under review until the executive committee decides. The officials promised to follow proper procedures for making changes.
