Gaming insiders are buzzing about Phil Spencer stepping away from his top job at Xbox. The Microsoft Gaming chief executive might call it quits after the company releases its next gaming console. Sarah Bond currently runs Xbox operations and could take over Spencer's role. TheGhostOfHope broke the story on social media and has nailed Call of Duty scoops before. Insider-Gaming backed up the claims and says they have heard similar whispers all year. Spencer has spent decades climbing Microsoft's corporate ladder since joining back in 1988. The 57-year-old executive jumped onto the Xbox team in 2001 and grabbed the top spot in 2014. He fixed the disaster that was the Xbox One launch after his predecessor Dom Mattrick left behind a complete mess. Spencer made Xbox Game Pass the hottest deal in gaming and helped Microsoft buy massive studios like Bethesda and Activision Blizzard. However those huge purchases led to thousands of workers losing their jobs. Nobody knows exactly when Spencer will pack up his office but most experts think it will happen soon. Microsoft plans to launch an Xbox-branded handheld device later this year and a brand new console sometime after that. Spencer could stick around for one or both of those releases before heading into retirement. The gaming executive has reached the peak of his career and age makes his departure feel inevitable rather than shocking.
