Santa Monica Studio has confirmed that Phranque and Rue join Faye shortly after she wakes in the Everywhen. They look designed to grab attention, especially a talking cosmic cube and an enchanted ribbon attached to a dangerous sword. Their actual roles are less random than the reveal makes them seem. Phranque is a protector first. He cares about his friends and the creatures living in the Everywhen, while Rue has a narrower duty tied to keeping a powerful blade out of unsafe hands. Jack Quaid plays Phranque, Perlina Lau plays Rue, and Faye meets both while trying to escape a place she never expected to enter. The debate over God of War: Laufey’s new direction has made Phranque easy to reduce to the strange blue cube from the trailer. Santa Monica’s own development history points somewhere more deliberate. Phranque and Rue were created at different stages, for different problems, and they give Faye different kinds of support. [HEADING=2]The two companions were built for different reasons[/HEADING] Game director Ariel Lawrence has said Phranque was already a complete character in pre-production when she returned to Santa Monica Studio in 2021. Faye and Phranque were the two characters already taking shape at that point. Rue came later, after the team started solving a more practical problem around Faye’s weapon. The Leviathan Axe was not coming back to her. Faye had given it to Kratos, and the studio wanted a new legendary weapon that suited her speed, flexibility, and lighter movement. As ribbons became part of the weapon design, the team began thinking about who would guard the sword before Faye arrived, and Rue grew from that job. It means Rue was not simply written as another voice to accompany Faye. Her identity is attached to access, trust, and control of the weapon itself. Faye earns enough of Rue’s trust to wield the sword during their escape, so the relationship has a mechanical consequence from the start. Phranque comes from the opposite direction. His shape makes him look deliberately absurd, but the team had already spent years thinking about how an apparently inanimate form could carry personality and human connection. Lawrence has described him as a companion with mechanical possibilities as well as a character with his own view of the Everywhen. [HEADING=2]Phranque is not being treated as comic relief[/HEADING] The reveal gave Phranque only a handful of spoken lines, which left plenty of room for people to decide what sort of character he was. Lawrence later pushed back on the idea that he exists mainly to fire off jokes. His earnestness and immediate honesty are intentional, but the studio is not treating those traits as proof that he is unserious. His larger narrative job is clearer. Phranque helps Faye understand the Everywhen as it currently exists, including the damage and danger around its inhabitants. Faye arrives with an urgent personal goal involving Kratos and Atreus, while Phranque already has reasons to care about the place she wants to escape. The difference gives the pair useful friction without requiring them to argue constantly. Faye is looking outward toward home. Phranque has roots and loyalties inside the Everywhen, so information about the world can come from someone with a stake in it rather than from detached exposition. Game companions often have to carry several duties at once, and companion design works across several roles including behavior, communication, relationships, and narrative significance. Phranque already sits across several of those categories. His final gameplay abilities remain largely unrevealed, so treating every trailer action as a finished system would go beyond what Santa Monica has confirmed. [HEADING=2]Rue turns a weapon into a relationship[/HEADING] Rue’s job is more concrete because Faye’s sword depends on her approval. Santa Monica calls the blade devastatingly powerful and says Rue is responsible for preventing it from reaching the wrong hands. Faye cannot simply discover the weapon and claim it because another character has authority over whether she should use it. This also changes how the sword fits into Faye’s story. Kratos usually owns his weapons outright once they become part of his arsenal, but Faye begins this relationship by earning access from a guardian. The weapon therefore arrives with another person’s judgment attached to it. The sword itself still carries unanswered history. Lawrence has only described it as an epic weapon with a story, without confirming a familiar mythological identity or supplying its proper name. Claims that it is Excalibur, a known divine relic, or proof of a specific pantheon remain speculation for now. Phranque and Rue ultimately solve two different problems around Faye. One gives her a local connection to a world she does not understand, while the other gives her a weapon without erasing the meaning of the Leviathan Axe passing to Kratos. Their unusual designs are the loudest part of the reveal, but their functions are already much more specific.
