This catches people who assume the scale display protects every stage of the plugin. It does not. A vocal can be corrected cleanly to an allowed note. Shift it afterward, and the result can land on a note the original scale would have rejected, so interval choice still needs to agree with the harmony. For doubles, start with small movements rather than reaching straight for an octave. A few semitones can create an obviously separate part, but they also make wrong harmonic choices easier to hear. Solo the shifted return briefly, check it against the chords, then bring the dry voice back. Large moves expose processing faster. For prerecorded vocals, Universal Audio recommends disabling Low Latency when you make substantial pitch corrections or shifts. The higher-latency mode can produce more precise results. Keep Low Latency for tracking, where immediate monitoring matters more than squeezing maximum precision from an offline vocal layer. Move them and the singer can sound smaller, larger, brighter, darker, younger, or more imposing even when the musical pitch itself stays where it was. The effect becomes obvious long before you move a full octave. Topline lets Formant move independently from Pitch. This matters because ordinary pitch shifting can change both perceived note and vocal character in ways you may not want. The problem becomes more obvious when the goal is a natural result. The Link control joins Pitch and Formant so both knobs move to the same value. Leave them linked when you want a deliberately transformed voice whose character moves with the pitch. Unlink them when the shifted layer should keep more of the singer's original identity while the note moves elsewhere. A useful backing-vocal trick is to move Pitch while leaving Formant near its default position. The layer separates musically without immediately becoming a cartoon version of the lead. For a darker double, move Formant slightly downward while keeping Pitch at zero. Blend it quietly under the original instead of treating it as a replacement performance. Below 100 percent, the dry vocal remains present alongside the shifted signal, which lets one Topline instance create an octave layer or harmony-like blend. At 100 percent, only the shifted version remains. A formant move that sounds excessive in solo can work at a low mix level because the original voice carries intelligibility and identity. The shifted layer only needs enough presence to widen the tone or create another apparent register. Pushing it too high can make the artificial register become the main event. For an octave support layer, set Pitch to plus or minus 12 semitones and pull Shift Mix back until the second register sits behind the lead. For stranger textures, unlink Formant and push it in the opposite direction from Pitch. A high note with a lower resonance character can feel much heavier than a basic octave duplicate.
