Police have busted a major illegal mining operation and arrested seven men who were digging for gold without permission. The suspects got caught during a surprise raid at Abora in the Upper Denkyira West District after officers received secret information about the mining activities. The arrested men include Latif Abdul Gyimah who is 55 years old, Mohammed Bello aged 44, George Azu who is 52, plus four younger men. Kingsley Owusu is just 23 while Sampson Afadzi is 45, Simon Atakpo is 21, and Andrews Otto is 26 years old. All seven suspects remain locked up and are helping police with their investigation. Officers discovered a huge stash of equipment and weapons during the raid that shocked everyone involved. The mining gang had been using serious firepower including three shotguns and 26 live bullets to protect their operation. Police also grabbed two big excavators, computer monitors, three motorbikes without license plates, and a water pump machine. The Central Regional Police Command confirmed they are still hunting for more excavators that the suspects may have hidden around the mining site. The police force has promised to keep fighting against people who mine illegally and destroy the environment. Officers say they will continue tracking down anyone who breaks the law by mining without proper permits. All the seized items are being kept safe as evidence while the investigation continues moving forward.
