Pope Francis Dies at 88 After Stroke and Coma

Pope Francis died at age 88 from a stroke that led to a coma and heart failure. The world mourned his passing on Easter Monday.

The Vatican reported his death officially through Dr. Andrea Arcangeli, who runs health services for Vatican City. The Pope had several health issues before his death, such as breathing problems, lung infections, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Doctors confirmed his death through heart monitoring tests.

"I state that the causes of death are as listed above, based on my knowledge and judgment," Dr. Arcangeli wrote in his report. The Vatican Press Office shared this information Monday evening.

The Pope will rest in the Basilica of St. Mary Major, specifically in the Pauline Chapel. This location houses the ancient Maria Salus Populi Romani icon, a place he chose himself in his Spiritual Testament.
