Four prison guards face murder charges after they beat a man to death at a government office building in Harare. A judge ordered Nqobile Dube, Faith Makoni, Godfrey Damu, and Munashe Zvavambire to stay in jail until their bail hearing. These Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services members attacked Jeffreys Kandemiiri when he came to visit his uncle on March 6. The attack happened between 5 and 6 PM at the Mgandane Dlodlo Building on Central Avenue. Court records say the guards first chased Jeffreys away. They caught him on the second floor, where things turned violent. Dube kicked Jeffreys many times in the stomach as Makoni and Damu punched him repeatedly. The guards then dragged Jeffreys to the basement and kept beating him. Dube kicked him more and stood on him as he lay on the floor. Damu hit his legs with a broomstick until he screamed in pain. Makoni and Damu punched his back and face. Zvavambire slapped him and poured water over him. Other workers finally stepped in and stopped the attack. The guards made Jeffreys leave the building. He managed to reach a nearby bus station before he passed out. Kind strangers helped him get home that night. He suffered terrible pain from internal injuries all night long. His mother took him to a local clinic the next morning. Doctors sent him straight to Parirenyatwa Hospital. He stayed there for seven days before he died early on March 14. Medical experts found his death came from severe injuries and an infection in his abdomen caused by the beating. Police arrested all four guards after they finished their investigation.
