Race car plows into crowd killing Varna spectator

A spectator died and eight people suffered injuries on Saturday when a racing car left the track at the Aladzha Monastery mountain climb in Varna. Police reported the crash occurred at 11:10 a.m. on the first turn after the T-intersection with Knyaz Boris I Boulevard. The driver missed the bend and struck a 60-year-old spectator after crossing the guardrail.

A 27-year-old woman remained in intensive care with life-threatening injuries, and a 39-year-old man sustained an ankle fracture. Officials said additional victims arrived at hospitals with minor injuries. The Automobile Federation of Bulgaria organized the race with support from Varna Municipality as the fourth round of the National Championship. The event honored Todor Slavov, who died at the Tvarditsa-Elena rally in 2015.
