Record Snowfall Hits Hokkaido, Disrupts Schools and Travel

Heavy Snow Blankets Northern Japan.

A massive winter storm has brought record snowfall to Japan's northern island of Hokkaido, causing widespread disruptions.

The city of Obihiro received 1.2 meters (4 feet) of snow in just 12 hours, setting a new local record. The severe weather forced about 370 schools to close on Tuesday.

The storm has severely impacted transportation, affecting both road traffic and air travel across the region. Weather forecasts predict blizzard conditions will continue in northern Japan for the next five days.

Most areas expect half a meter of fresh snow. The mountains of Honshu could receive more than two meters (6.5 feet) of accumulation.

The annual snow festival in Sapporo, southern Hokkaido, continues despite the weather system. The city reports minimal disruptions to the popular winter celebration.
