Respawn Halts Mystery Shooter, Sparks Titanfall Buzz

Respawn Entertainment canceled a secret new game project recently. A former worker posted about losing their job on LinkedIn. Many gaming websites noticed this and started guessing what the mystery game might have been. The company had formed a special team to develop fresh ideas not long ago.

Last year's job openings at Respawn asked for people who knew how to design multiplayer first-person shooters. The studio runs several teams across different locations. These groups work on popular games like Apex Legends and Star Wars titles, plus other unannounced projects. Electronic Arts owns Respawn, with industry veteran Vince Zampella leading operations. He currently faces the tough challenge of fixing problems with the Battlefield series.

Zampella mentioned in 2023 that he would consider bringing back Titanfall. The second Titanfall game sold poorly when it came out in October 2016, despite critics loving it and players begging for more. EA decided to shelve the series anyway. Rumors started flying around last March about a possible comeback. Insiders connected Steve Fukuda to these rumors because he directed both original Titanfall games. Many fans suspect this newly canceled project might have been a Titanfall-related prototype.

Respawn still mentions its game incubation team on its website, but clicking job links redirects to positions for other active projects instead. Earlier this year, EA announced it stopped making a Star Wars first-person shooter at Respawn. Both companies appear to concentrate on their proven successful franchises for upcoming releases. Their next Star Wars Jedi game seems likely to move forward since the previous one performed well.
