Grand Theft Auto VI gives Jason and Lucia a city that reacts to their choices. A demo at Rockstar North in Edinburgh took them from a failed drug deal to a bash for rich showoffs. Netflix later aired the footage, with much for fans to unpack. The hype has a clear cause. GTA V moved 230 million units and made Rockstar billions. Geoff Keighley, the Game Awards host, thinks a new entry can stay hot for years. Brief launch buzz would be a low bar for this series. Vice City has a lot of ground to cover. Rockstar says its take on Miami is double the size of GTA V's Los Santos. There are car races, nightclubs, skydives, kayaks, and marsh trips. Traffic even stays consistent when seen from a rooftop and then at street level. Rob Nelson, a senior figure at Rockstar, showed the calmer stuff. Jason can eat, grab a drink from the fridge, and pet dogs. Shops sell treats for them. At the gym, good form and steady timing help him lift more weight. Bad reps drain his stamina. Not every hobby gets a full game mode, though. Tennis means hitting a ball with a racket. Nelson said the team had to set limits. His long playthrough covered the main plot and side tasks that can affect later events. Lucia gets her share of odd moments. In a street fight, she takes a rival's fallen shades and walks off wearing them. Elsewhere, the pair flee a shop heist on a stolen bike. Older cars can be hot-wired, while newer rides call for a cloned key. Making cash goes far past the usual jobs. Monster truck races, pool, and dives for lost goods can all pay. A bank raid turns ugly when a guard hits the alarm. The duo escapes with marked bills, which need a criminal buyer, as Lucia shoots a police car's tires. Their bond is in the player's hands. Jason and Lucia may date or keep things strictly about crime. Text replies, time spent together, and small acts affect how close they get. Holding hands after a shopping trip is an option, but trust takes effort. Cops have sharper ways to catch trouble. A witness may report a stolen bike, and bystanders can call for help at the sight of a gun. Erase security footage after a robbery, and the heat may stay low. Go loud, and officers will respond in kind. Four playable leads were in the early plans, but Rockstar chose two to help players form a close bond with each one. Nelson said Lucia was not added to address past complaints about women in GTA. The love-and-crime plot became the focus instead. The background cast got serious attention as well. Rather than build random mixes of faces and clothes, artists made each nonplayer character by hand. The animation count passes 600,000; GTA V had 55,000, and Red Dead Redemption 2 had 300,000. Even stray rooms have a human touch. Art chief Aaron Garbut described family photos, table marks, and decor picked to suit each resident. A team in Los Angeles worked on making pedestrians act with more care than those in past games. Sam Houser pushed for smooth shifts between play and story scenes, an idea Nelson carried through earlier Rockstar work. He once fought to make John Marston's last stand in Red Dead Redemption playable, rather than a scene fans could only watch. That choice still guides the studio. Snapmatic will fill the game with posts from stars, influencers, and friends. Rupert Humphries and writer Michael Wiafe want the satire to hit greed and ego without being tied to one news cycle. Major political events and the pandemic will not get direct story treatment. South Florida locals helped with the details. Studio crews checked clubs and tracks, rode with cops, and talked with gun range staff. A few of the people they met even got hired. Humphries wanted a broad view of the region, not just the crime. It faces stiff competition from The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, both made by CD Projekt Red. Players can try Rockstar's new ideas on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The hard part, Nelson admits, is making all these choices work together without showing the game's seams.
