Rovina Rata, 10, was barred from school for lacking an ID

A 10-year-old girl from Sarawak will be able to enroll in school after years without proper documentation once she receives her identification card in the next three to six months. Parti Keadilan Rakyat Lanang officials accompanied Rovina Rata and another undocumented child to the National Registration Department on Sept. 23 to begin the application process. Augustine Ijan, age 4, received his MyKid card on Sept. 28, but Rovina must wait several months for hers because her case involves additional complications.

The children's situations came to light on Sept. 21 when party members visited construction workers' families to distribute food baskets. Rovina's mother previously lacked identification documents herself, which had delayed the girl's application; however, the authorities processed the request after the mother obtained her MyKad. Party officials plan to take Rovina to the Education Department for school enrollment as soon as her documents arrive.
