RTX 5080 Mobile is a smart pick for gamers on a budget

The NVIDIA RTX 5080 Mobile runs great in gaming laptops but falls behind the RTX 5090 Mobile by about 10 to 15 percent in speed tests. Different tech websites like Notebookcheck ran tests using the same Schenker XMG Neo 16 laptops with Ryzen 9 9955HX chips inside. They found clear speed differences when playing tough games such as Baldur's Gate 3, Final Fantasy XV, and Assassin's Creed: Shadows.

You notice this gap most when playing at 4K. The difference shrinks when you play at lower screen settings because the graphics card matters less then. Even when you turn on DLSS features, the gap stays about the same. Tests with Assassin's Creed Shadows showed the RTX 5090 Mobile still ran 15 percent faster with DLSS turned on.

The RTX 5080 Mobile makes sense if you want to save cash without giving up much gaming power. The price jump between these cards hits your wallet hard. The RTX 5090 Mobile costs an extra €855 (about $928 US dollars) for the same laptop setup. That big price bump might not make sense for many people.

The money seems less worth it if you plan to play games on 1080p or 1440p screen settings. Sure, the RTX 5090 Mobile gives you the best possible speed, but many gamers will find the RTX 5080 Mobile fast enough for their needs. The price savings could let you upgrade other parts of your system or buy more games instead.
