Ruto mentors MP but locals dont buy it

When President Ruto said he mentors Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, people living in Kiharu started talking about it a lot. They shared different opinions before the President planned to visit their area on Thursday. Ruto made these comments during his Monday night TV appearance at Sagana State Lodge, right as he began his five-day tour across the Mt Kenya region.

The President mentioned he helps guide Nyoro along with other young leaders like Kimani Ichung'wah, who leads the National Assembly majority. He asked everyone to let him handle Nyoro, saying young politicians make mistakes sometimes but need guidance. Yet many Kiharu locals think Ruto just wants to smooth things over before arriving in Murang'a county.

These residents pointed out how Nyoro lost his job as head of the important Budget Committee last month. Others who lost leadership roles had supported former Deputy President Gachagua. Kamau Mutuota from Kiharu believes Nyoro seems pushed outside the inner circle of government despite what Ruto claims about mentorship.

Mutuota thinks the President talks about mentoring because he needs support during his regional visit. Many suspect Ruto travels through Mt Kenya to win back people after fighting with Gachagua. During his Sagana interview, Ruto denied involvement in changing committee leaders or making MPs impeach his deputy, saying lawmakers acted legally on their choices.

The President explained how committee positions changed because they needed better regional balance. He said Mt Kenya had twelve committee chairs out of twenty-five, compared to nine from Rift Valley. They agreed that each region should give up three positions, with members deciding who would step down from leadership roles.

Robert Mutune, another local person, mentioned that Nyoro himself revealed he hasn't talked with President Ruto since October. Mutune called Nyoro their modern-day Matiba, saying residents asked him to stay quiet and keep working for them. Hannah Wanjiru praised how Nyoro transformed their area through his leadership.

She believes if Ruto truly mentors Nyoro, he should protect him from political attacks, especially since Nyoro campaigned hard for Kenya Kwanza. Murathi Magochi added that voters chose Nyoro because of his abilities and campaign efforts before 2022. He described how Nyoro promoted Ruto nationally instead of focusing on local campaigns.

Magochi also mentioned that government officials recently avoided attending Nyoro's opening of a new administration office. This shows growing tensions between the MP and national leadership despite what the President claims about their relationship. Many locals remain loyal to Nyoro regardless of his current standing with President Ruto.
