Kenya's Health Secretary Aden Duale thanked President William Ruto for appointing five Muslims to help select members for the Waqf Commission. This group manages Islamic donations and ensures the proper operation of charitable assets. It also handles legal issues that have blocked progress for many years. The Attorney General Dorcas Oduor picked these five people through an official notice dated March 28, 2025. She named them Jahawir Keinan Hassan, Al-Hajji Hassan Kirua ole Naado, Sheikh Ibrahim Lethome Asmani, Sheikh Abdala Ibrahim Ateka, and Sumayya Hassan. These individuals must find good candidates to serve on the actual commission. Duale wrote on social media Saturday that President Ruto kept his word to the Muslim community. The president had promised earlier that Attorney General Oduor would fix long-standing legal problems within months. Duale sees these appointments as proof that real action has started. The Health Secretary explained how the Waqf Commission plays an important part in running Islamic endowments. Creating this selection panel helped end a long-running deadlock. A waqf is a permanent charitable gift under Islamic law that cannot be taken back. The Waqf Act became law on March 31, 2022. This law requires the commission to handle donations like buildings, land, or other assets given for Muslim religious or charitable purposes. People who donate these items cannot ask for them back later. The commission must register these properties and manage everything under the 2022 law.
