President Ruto picked Geoffrey Ruku, the Mbeere North MP, for his Cabinet team on Wednesday. Ruku learned about his new job as Cabinet Secretary for Public Service and Human Capital Development when he traveled with Deputy President Kithure Kindiki to check on the Kanyuambora irrigation water project in Mbeere North. Kindiki showed up without warning for this visit. The Star found out that Deputy President Kindiki helped Ruku land this Cabinet spot. After the vetting process finishes, Ruku will take over for Justin Muturi, who lost his Cabinet job. Ruku has always spoken up to defend the Kenya Kwanza government. Even though his party - the Democratic Party - told the Registrar they planned to leave the Kenya Kwanza group, Ruku said he would keep backing the government. The Democratic Party, where Ruku belongs, has ties to Muturi. Ruku has always cheered for Kindiki since he became the Deputy President. He stands among leaders who firmly support Kindiki leading the Mt Kenya region, starting from Mt Kenya East. Before Ruto announced Ruku's nomination, experts said Kindiki's trip to Mbeere North looked promising, especially since he had stayed out of public view for weeks except for official events. President Ruto also made other changes to his team at the same time. He moved Aden Duale to handle the Health department, and Debora Barasa will run the Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry department, where Duale worked before. The President also chose Hannah Cheptumo as the Cabinet Secretary for Gender, Culture, Arts, and Heritage.
