President Ruto promised equal treatment for Lower Eastern Kenya during development plans. On Wednesday, he met with 1,500 leaders from Machakos, Makueni, and Kitui counties at State House, Nairobi. The region will receive its fair share of national resources, just like other parts of the country. Religious leaders from the Catholic, African Inland Church, and the African Brotherhood Church attended the meeting. Ruto stated that Ukambani would not lag behind as Kenya moves forward. The government has started housing projects across the region with 166 units in Kitui, 365 in Wote, 900 in Makindu, and 5,000 in Mavoko. Ruto allocated Sh5.6 billion to connect 60,000 homes to electricity this financial year. The administration set aside Sh1.5 billion to pay people whose land was taken for the Kibwezi-Kitui road. Officials processed 40,000 title deeds for residents of the three counties. An extra Sh6 billion will help finish the Thwake Dam to solve water problems. Ruto asked local leaders to encourage more people to sign up for the Social Health Authority. Current enrollment stands at 35 percent in Machakos, 28 percent in Makueni, and 22 percent in Kitui. The President dismissed claims that SHA does not work. He said drug deliveries will go straight to hospitals instead of county offices. Later this year, he plans to launch a Sh40 billion clinker factory in Kitui.
