Police arrested Constable Prince Ndavambi after he killed a man during custody. The officer had fled from duty weeks earlier when officials opened a case against him. Ndavambi beat 30-year-old Blessed Believe Juruvenge to death at Ruwa Police Station on May 28. The victim died over a disputed 200 dollar payment that family members said was already settled. Police Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest to reporters. Juruvenge was expecting his first child when officers took him from his home. His sister Melissa Manyepa watched Ndavambi beat her brother with a wooden hoe handle. Other officers stood around and did nothing to stop the violence. One officer even gave Ndavambi handcuffs to use during the attack. Witnesses heard threats that Juruvenge would leave the station dead. The family refused to bury Juruvenge until someone faced charges for his death. His body remains at Parirenyatwa Hospital morgue awaiting justice. Legal experts say Ndavambi will struggle to receive bail because he ran from authorities. Murder suspects must apply for bail at High Court rather than magistrate court. Prosecutors will likely fight any bail request because the officer tried to escape.
