Safaricom says teamwork made M-Pesa great. Board chair Adil Khawaja thanked everyone who helped build their money platform into a worldwide success story. At the 18-year celebration, he expressed gratitude to tech partners for creating a system that handles billions of transactions without problems. Banks, financial companies, and business allies earned praise for expanding M-Pesa's reach through their trust and partnership. Khawaja pointed out that dealers and agents represent M-Pesa's public face, connecting people with technology. CEO Peter Ndegwa looked back at nearly twenty years of growth. He highlighted how M-Pesa helped include more people in banking, linked families across distances and created opportunities for millions. The platform succeeds through innovation and working together, growing beyond Kenya into seven additional countries. The company is excited about future possibilities as it marks this milestone. M-Pesa brought millions of unbanked Kenyans into formal financial systems. It changed how families send money nationwide to support relatives far away. Its power grows stronger through connections with other digital services, creating smooth financial experiences for users across the platform. Central Bank official Michael Eganza attended the celebration. He noted that Kenya became a global example despite having no mobile money rulebook during M-Pesa's early days. Because of M-Pesa, digital money services remain safe, cheap, and available to all Kenyans. Regulators work to build trust, stability, and customer confidence for licensed providers, which companies like Safaricom appreciate. M-Pesa launched officially on March 6, 2007. People doubted it at first, but simple features and convenience attracted users quickly. Just one month after starting, M-Pesa counted 19,671 active mobile users. By November of that same year, the numbers jumped dramatically to 1,041,522 active users. Ndegwa reported that they handle over 100 million daily transactions, processing 4,000 transfers each second. Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe joined the event, representing ICT Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo. Former Treasury head Njuguna Ndung'u and previous Central Bank Governor Patrick Njoroge also attended. Kagwe served as IT minister when M-Pesa first began its journey. The platform continues transforming lives across East Africa as it moves into its nineteenth year of operation.
