Numerical Audio just brought their popular iOS synth to Mac computers. The new ShockWave uses Phase Distortion Synthesis mixed with a modular setup. You'll find two PD Oscillators that make everything from clean Sine Waves to rough Sawtooth and Square Waves, plus Resonance sweeps, filtered Noise, and lots more. When you connect these oscillators through Cross-Mod, they create even more sounds, including DX-style phase Modulation, different kinds of Frequency Modulation, and Amplitude/Ring Modulation effects. The synth includes two low-frequency oscillators and two Attack/Sustain/Release Envelopes for changing sounds. These parts link together in many ways - the envelopes can start from various triggers or connect, letting you build complex patches as big modular systems do. Each LFO can lock to tempo and makes five different wave shapes. The main volume control works with either envelope, both at once, or neither - perfect for making drone sounds. You can split signals to stereo or use simple MIDI gate mode, which frees up envelopes for other jobs. ShockWave comes with extra control features: two 8-step sequencers, a sample and hold module, trigger dividers, logic comparison tools, and random generators. All these parts work with built-in Delay and Reverb effects on send buses, letting you adjust every setting, including send levels. The easy mod matrix connects 11 sources to over 40 destinations. The engine supports MPE for expressive playing and includes 150 factory presets ready to use right away. You can run ShockWave by itself with USB audio gear, wired MIDI, network MIDI, or Bluetooth MIDI. It sends MIDI Out signals to chain multiple copies, control hardware, or trigger other plugins. The program syncs to tempo and accepts remote MIDI control. Mac users need MacOS 14 or newer on either Apple Silicon or Intel processors. The Audio Unit v3 Extension works with compatible music apps. Numerical Audio sells ShockWave for Mac through their store at a special price of $14.99 instead of the regular $29.99. Anyone interested can download a free trial version first. This powerful synth brings professional sound design capabilities to Mac musicians without complicated setups or steep learning curves. The visual interface makes complex sound design easier through its modular approach and intuitive controls.
