SMIC Fumbles 5nm and Huawei Gets in on the Mess

Kiwoom Securities analysts from South Korea predict SMIC will finish creating its 5 nm chip process in 2025. This news came from a recent social media update by Jukanlosreve. SMIC is the leading chip factory in China, partly funded by the government. They appear heavily connected to making the next version of Huawei Ascend 910 AI chips that many talk about.

Workers at SMIC factories reportedly hit roadblocks trying to advance beyond 7 nm technology because they can't easily access modern EUV machines. Last month, TechPowerUp wrote that major players in Chinese chip-making allegedly work on special light systems for advanced 5 nm and 3 nm chip production. Huawei tests a home-built laser machine that creates plasma discharge, but finished equipment won't be ready for factories until 2026.

Jukanlosreve shared a brief take on the Kiwoom report, saying SMIC started making 7 nm chips without EUV systems and finished developing the 5 nm process to help make Huawei Ascend 910C chips. The report claims SMIC spends 40-50% more money than TSMC making 5 nm chips and produces about one-third as many working chips per batch. Chinese factories must use older ASML machines, making them unable to match the quality or amount of chips made by global companies like TSMC and Samsung.

The recent arrival of SiCarrier's Color Mountain series points toward a brighter future for Chinese chip factories. These developments show how China pushes forward with chip technology despite facing major challenges in getting access to cutting-edge manufacturing equipment from abroad. The gap between Chinese and global leaders remains significant but appears to be slowly narrowing through persistent effort and alternative approaches.
