Movement for Change politician Solomon Owusu blasted the suspended Chief Justice for her complaints about family access during removal hearings. Gertrude Torkornoo had moaned that officials blocked her husband from entering the venue where investigators questioned her. Owusu mocked her concerns and wondered if she needs her spouse present to do her job properly. He asked whether her husband sits beside her when she writes court decisions. The politician called her gripes about spousal support completely ridiculous. Owusu hammered Torkornoo for breaking constitutional rules about secret hearings. He pointed out that Article 146 demands all removal proceedings stay behind closed doors. The Chief Justice violated these laws when she spoke publicly about her case at a press conference. Owusu branded her actions as completely lawless and said officials could charge her with contempt. He argued that she looked directly at citizens and ignored the constitution. The suspended judge has taken her battle to the ECOWAS Community Court located in Nigeria. She filed legal papers against Ghana over her removal process. Torkornoo claims the five-member investigation committee abused her human rights during hearings. She previously told local courts that investigators treat her worse than people accused of treason. The Chief Justice called the entire process degrading and unconstitutional. President John Mahama suspended Torkornoo on April 22 after receiving three separate petitions demanding her removal. He created a special committee to examine the serious allegations against her. The Chief Justice maintains that nobody has properly informed her about the specific charges she faces.
