Over 645,000 people crossed at Beitbridge Border Post during the 2024 holiday season, South Africa's Border Management Authority (BMA) announced Tuesday.

The numbers rose at all South African entry points compared to 2023. Beitbridge, which links several African nations, ranks as the region's busiest inland crossing. It handles about 15,000 daily travelers in normal times, with three times more during peak periods.

OR Tambo International Airport led with one million visitors, followed by Beitbridge's 645,590 and Lebombo's 571,131 to Mozambique. The total reached 5.1 million travelers across 71 entry points, up 51,680 from last year but below pre-Covid levels of six million.

Officials processed 395,189 cars, 12,974 minibus taxis, and 6,071 buses. Ten major crossings, including airports and harbors, handled 67% of all movement.

The BMA cleared 58,938 trucks—47,891 for exports and 11,047 for imports. Three-quarters of export trucks cleared customs within 30 minutes, and two-thirds of import trucks met the same timeline.

Beitbridge serves as a vital link for travelers from Botswana, Mozambique, DRC, Zambia, Angola, Tanzania, Malawi, and Zimbabwe.
