The fighting in South Sudan pushed at least 85 people into Uganda on March 27, 2025. These asylum seekers crossed at Busia Border in the Koboko district. Women and children made up part of this group, fleeing the violence. They escaped as battles heated up between forces loyal to President Kiir and Vice President Machar. The 2018 peace deal between these two leaders appears ready to break apart completely. Many fear South Sudan might return to full civil war. The rebel group SPLA-IO grabbed control of the Busia Border area. Uganda then closed this crossing point, blocking anyone from entering South Sudan. Police official Collins Asea confirmed that local authorities received these asylum seekers. "We continue to receive refugees from South Sudan through the Busia Border due to the ongoing insurgency," he said. The South Sudan Army and Ugandan military forces have targeted this area, making it dangerous for travel. Uganda sent soldiers to help President Kiir after he asked for assistance. World leaders warn that this conflict threatens to destroy the peace agreement that ended years of fighting. That previous war forced millions from their homes. Uganda has already given shelter to more than 1.74 million refugees as of September 2024. The West Nile region houses over 950,000 of these displaced people. South Sudanese make up 55 percent of all refugees living in Uganda. Last year alone, Uganda accepted 98,232 new arrivals seeking safety. This latest group of 85 asylum seekers represents just the beginning of what could become another major wave of people fleeing renewed warfare.
