Sri Lanka Police captured more than 1,700 kilograms of illegal drugs during April and May 2025. Officers found heroin and crystal methamphetamine hidden on fishing boats that criminals used to bring narcotics into the country. The Police Narcotics Bureau conducted four major operations that led to these drug seizures. Law enforcement teams worked hard to stop smugglers from using the ocean to transport dangerous substances. These raids represent some of the largest drug busts in recent months. Police arrested 25 people during these anti-smuggling operations around Sri Lankan waters. Criminals had been using multi-day fishing trips as cover for their illegal drug transportation schemes. Officers discovered that smugglers chose fishing vessels because they could stay at sea for several days without raising suspicion. The arrests show that authorities are cracking down on ocean-based drug trafficking networks. Many of those caught face serious charges related to international drug smuggling. The seized heroin carries an estimated street value of 10.84 billion rupees according to police calculations. Crystal methamphetamine found during the raids is worth approximately 12.16 billion rupees on the illegal market. These massive drug seizures removed billions of rupees worth of harmful substances from reaching Sri Lankan communities. Police say sea-based drug trafficking continues to pose major problems for law enforcement agencies. The number of drug seizures and arrests has grown significantly as criminals try new smuggling methods.
