St Petersburg Ditches 1500 Clunky Lifts

The city plans to replace elevators in 392 apartment buildings by year-end. In the coming months, workers will install 1,558 new lifts across St. Petersburg.

The Housing Committee says this replacement project forms part of a major infrastructure upgrade. About 1,300 elevators will be changed through the Capital Repairs Fund, with homeowner associations, housing cooperatives, and management companies paying for the other 258 units.

Each elevator needs its custom design because shaft measurements vary even within the same building. Crews face special challenges when working in the historical center, where they must preserve the architectural appearance of older structures.

Last year, workers installed 2,549 new elevators throughout the city. Officials want to replace almost 5,000 outdated elevators by 2030. At the beginning of this year, residents started paying higher fees for building repairs.
