Fitness, Music Stars Join Oliver Mtukudzi Marathon Event. Popular dance leaders John Cole and Zororai "Zorro" Nhira will host Zumba sessions at the Oliver Mtukudzi Half Marathon on February 2. The event takes place at Pakare Paye Arts Centre in Norton. "We added Zumba classes to give athletes more options," said marathon director Sylvia Sanyanga. The sessions aim to honor Mtukudzi's legacy and raise diabetes awareness. The renowned musician died from diabetes complications on January 23, 2019, at age 66. Though named a national hero, his family chose burial at his Madziwa home in Mashonaland Central. The National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe supports this annual tribute. Runners can choose 5 km, 10 km, or 21.1 km races, starting at 5 am. All paths begin and end at Pakare Paye. Top artists support the 2025 event. Jah Prayzah shared a promotional video, joining Ashton "Mbeu" Nyahora and Andy Muridzo in supporting the race, which drew 500 participants last year. The celebration includes music from Tuku's Black Spirits Band. Organizers plan to auction his merchandise and music recordings. Pakare Paye Arts Centre stands as Mtukudzi's lasting gift. The facility offers performance spaces, recording studios, and training for new artists. His students include Mbeu, Munya Mataruse, and Gary Tight. Registration remains open for teams and individuals. Each runner receives a medal and refreshments after finishing their race. The event combines athletics, music, and fitness to remember Zimbabwe's music legend. His center continues its mission of developing talent and enriching lives through art.
