Prosecutors brought terrorism charges against 37 people at Kahawa Law Courts on Tuesday. The suspects face serious accusations for attacks that happened on June 25, 2025 in two different locations. Twenty-five defendants are connected to violent incidents in Kikuyu, Kiambu county that lasted from noon until late evening. The remaining twelve suspects were arrested after a separate attack in Matuu, Machakos county. Court officials confirmed the Director of Public Prosecutions approved all charges after reviewing investigation files. The Kikuyu group allegedly destroyed multiple government buildings during their rampage. Attackers targeted the local law courts, county offices, and police station. They also damaged the registrar of persons office, probation services, and education department. The suspects face additional arson charges for burning down these facilities. Prosecutors told the court the destruction was extensive and deliberate. The Matuu suspects allegedly attacked police officers and destroyed patrol cars. They stormed the local police station and caused significant damage to vehicles. Officers at the station were assaulted during the incident. Two other people named Peter Kinyanjui Wanjiru and Serah Wanjiku Thiga were also charged. Defense lawyers claimed these two were kidnapped after getting bail at Ruiru Law Courts. Magistrate Gideon Kiaga ordered all suspects to remain in jail until July 10. The court will decide on a defense application to block the terrorism charges. Prosecutors stressed they are targeting people who committed terrorist acts, not peaceful demonstrators. Defense teams are fighting to have the charges dropped completely.
